this is a heads up on an event "we" are going to do for Vance Peel who was injured at croom and is still 84 days in intensive care, slowly recovering.

i have been asked by cheri his wife to do a poker run in hopes to provide some economic relief with their massing health expenses.

also mark good from croom management (the guy who got us a bulldozer to keep croom groomed now) is asking our help since he can not get involved directly.

it is time for us all to step up and appreciate what we have and give a little time and effort for someone who has not.

as most of us are, strapped for cash, i ask that everyone take a small part in the production of this event. i have never entered a poker run or managed one to say the least. if someone has and would like to manage the program please let me know otherwise we can do it together!

first...i have emailed Mark at Croom and we will get approvals and set a date. TENATIVELY Nov. 14 a sat. once we have this I will create a draft flyer describing the event and a letter explaining the event, also including my contact info for local businesses to have a point person to manage the donations.

im not the greatest flyer maker so if anyone would like to do so please ask.

also this is where our family can help. you can print the flyers at home and take a moment to stop by your local shop or anyone else that may be interested in helping. this is very important so we may have several oportunituties for some good stuff and create excitement to enter!

we set dates to go to final printing including all the sponsors logos, etc. and prizes! this too will be able to print from home and distribute.

we could pitch in for hot dogs and drinks for riders and cookout....

need volunteers for card stations. wrist bands.....etc.

these are just bits of a plan that needs to be developed. everyone please help make this successful, i know "we" can! wooot

more to come after i talk to mark tomorrow....

i forgot to add...

he is conscious and has not received any letters or cards. cheri says this small effort means the world to him right now. and is the first thing he asks when she arrives daily.

if you can take a moment and send something, send it to:

I will do what ever I can to help. I have never managed a poker run but I have been on a few only I was on a snowmobile instead of a quad. Works the same way though. I can help print the flyers (help design if you want) I can also help with the map as I already have a map of Croom. Just need to decide how many people will hold the cards and where they will be stationed .

A general idea of what a poker run is.. source http://www.midwesttrailriders.com/atv/poker_run.asp

What is a Poker Run?

Introduction

What is that? Many of us have asked that same question when we hear a new term or phrase we are not familiar with. Poker Runs are one of the least understood activities in ATV'ing. This section of the site is dedicated to changing that. We hope you find it useful.

So just what is a Poker Run?

Don't feel bad if you are not sure. I wasn't sure either the first time I heard someone mention a poker run. I just thought it was some type of race and left it at that. Actually I found out a short time later that a poker run isn't a race. It is more like a rally.

Poker runs have been popular with car and motorcylce enthusiasts for years. With the explosion in ATV sales and usage, many riding areas are finding that Poker runs are a great way to draw new riders, rasie extra money and offer yet another way for ATV riders to enjoy the sport.

A Poker run starts with a list of stops or destinations. These stops are usually on predefined set of trails. For each stop you reach you get to draw a single playing card from a deck of 52 cards. The person manning the stop will record the card you have drawn on some form of tally sheet or form that you carry with you. This tally sheet or form will also have your poker run entry number on it. This is done to prevent riders from drawing more than one card at any stop. Once you reach all of the stops you will have picked up all the cards "dealt" to you.

Usually there are five stops in a poker run but there can be more. For example, there could be seven stops and the player gets to choose the best five cards to keep for their hand. At the final destination the player with the best over all poker hand wins. Its not real complicated.

The run is not timed so there is no advantage to riding the course fast. It is handled this way for safety. There is typically a start and end time to the run but there is enough time allocated between the start and end times to allow for a rider to easily get to all the stops, visit and sometimes even grab lunch.

There are several variations of the Poker run. Each poker run you attend is likely to have slightly different rules. Some of the variations include:

Having the rides pick up a chip or marker at each stop instead of picking a card. The rider then trades in these chips or markers for cards when they return at the end of the day. The advantage to this variation is that the stops do not have to be manned.
Making the stops harder to find by giving clues to the stops instead of directions. This makes the poker run a little like a treasure hunt. This can be a lot of fun.
Don't let the riders draw the cards at the stops. Instead have then pick an envelope from a group of sealed envelopes that contain anywhere from 1 to 3 cards. This will result in some people getting extra cards which will allow more people to have better hands. This increases the excitement since there will be many "good" hands dealt.
Designate a card as a "special card". Anyone who draws this card some sort of prize.
Give a proze for the worst hand in addition to the best hand.
Allow riders to "buy" up to two cars when they return. This will give you an opportunity to rasie addition money. The rider would pay a few dollars to be able to turn in one or two cards and draw a replacement for those cards from the deck increasing thier chances for a better hand.
A poker run can be a lot of fun. Typically there are prizes or money offered for the winner(s).

Now the next time you hear about a poker run you will know what it is.

Thanks every one.

I think having the poker run at Croom is a great idea but one draw back I see is that if a person doesn't normally ride at Croom they are not going to want to pay the yearly fee on top of the donation just to ride in the poker run. I wonder if Croom would suspend the fee for the day and let the person ride in the poker run provided that they made a donation. Brian maybe you could ask Mark Good about that. Another thing I was wondering about is if there should be a waiver for the riders to sign. (May not be necessary because they will be riding at Croom). Depending on how many people make the ride and what prizes are donated we may need to have more then one ride. Maybe a South and North ride. How about a separate ride for the youngsters? Do we include any other activities? If so does any one have any ideas? I know a lot depends on how many prizes and riders we get but We need to get some ideas because we really don't have that much time to get this going..

Any one have any ideas for rules??

I think it would be good to also have an account set up for people who may not be able to participate but would like to donate to the cause.

update...

i been emailing back and forth with mark from the forestry. and he states:

As far as I am concerned, your club is having a picnic, needing a place to get together, will make the necessary arrangements with our Visitor’s Center that the Pavilion is yours on that date, and while you are all at CMA you will have an organized ride wherein you will all play a little Poker and give prizes. Sounds like a good time to me and innocent enough. If people make donations to your cause, who are we to complain? I think that you get my drift?

so tomorrow i will contact the folks mark forwarded and set the date as nov 14. i hope this works out for everyone.

Me and the family will help for sure, I think you should put together a list of things that will be needed and things that need to be done and everyone can pick what they are capable of doing. We also need to see about getting the motorcycle shop at the gate of croom involved. I know they particapte in the kids day event at croom and they might want to be a sponser too.
