Whats it mean when shocks hiss when they compress? Elka shocks with reservoirs.

Sounds like a seal. As I mentioned in your other thread call Matt Blommel. He takes care of alot of Sponsor Cup riders. Nick's had him do his Elkas. From what I understand he has a fast turnaround time too.

Yes but the hiss gets louder as air gets entrained to the oil as it passes thru the valves.

His have not been serviced in 2 years. Hard riding is recommended every 20hrs.

nitrogen is contained in the bladder residing in the reservoir, the bladder is sandwiched between the reservoir body, and bladder cap. i would have to think that any escaping nitrogen would pass between the metal to metal of the cap than the bladder sandwich...

as you hard compress (up stroke of the inner main valve) the shock a negative pressure is exerted in the body below the main valve. under normal sitting position the shock is serviced to pressurize the bladder to 120#. therefore under slow movement with a micro scratches or pitting, oil will eventually pass buy the main seal and dust seal in the head cap. consequently air also and more easily is able to pass into the shock body under the negative pressure of hard impacts. as air is combined with the oil it gets fine bubbles in it. the air and bubbles passing thru the main, compression and rebound valves will make a different noise if any air is in them.

i use the pump and listen once i finish a shock. if i hear any type of bubble i do them gain and i asure you you can hear a small amount of air.

if you want to check your own shocks you can take them off the bike. remove the springs and listen to the full stroke. i can almost guarantee if they have note been serviced for more than 20 hours of fast riding you will hear air at the top of the stroke (bottom out) and then if you keep pumping you will hear it mix.

this comes from what i have experienced anyway.

(if you have a non reservoir shock and the nitrogen is seperated with a waffer valve and then yes nitrogen can mix with the oil)
