just picked up a used Yamaha grizzly 125 and it looks like I will need some chain lube. I was wondering what chain lube would be the best to use. And where would be the best place to get it.

I've used a few and like Chain wax the most. I get it from Cycle gear usually. Definitely don't use the belray crap, it makes a huge mess and attracts more dirt and mud than anything else

i dont know about the wax crap.... it is hard to clean the chain since it sticks. i had used motor oil and let soak in between rides but lately i got a can of some oil based european stuff i like (will look and post the name) i got from cycle gear. i just wipe the chain and relube and looks like new :thumb:

never had any problems cleaning my chain with the chainwax on it...grunge brush took off all the heavy stuff easily. I heard Maxima Clean Up is good for that too, but I wanted to keep it simple and not get too many chemicals involved in cleaning

same here, bought into the hype of all the different types of exotic chain lubes. Now I run WD-40. Lubes, cleans, keeps the water out and from rusting, and it doesn't attract the dirt.

you guys should read up on wd40. dont get me wrong i use alot of it. but it is a "water displacer" and penetrant. precision stablizer says never lube the links with wd! i think it is rough on rubber seals which cant be good on o ring chains. notice the chain sounds sandy after you lube it with wd?

UMMMM ok nothing is simple any more. After reading through the comments here and on other forums every thing is as clear as mud. Some say they just use WD 40 to lube. Others say they clean the chain with WD 40 and then lube with something else. I’ve read that you can use WD 40 if the chain isn’t the O-ring type. Yet the company that makes WD 40 says it won’t harm the O-rings. (yeah I know what else would they say)

Ok so how do you tell if the chain has O-rings?

I don’t know what the guy used on the chain before I bought it but I do know the chain was caked with dirt and grease.

For those of you that use WD 40 do you have a problem of dirt and gunk accumulating on your chain? How about the folks that use the wax do you get a build up of gunk on your chains?

What does every one use to clean the chains before lubing them?

Although it is against manufactuor reccommendation, I use purple power and a pressure washer to clean the whole bike, including the chain and sprockets. I haven't had any issues with this yet. It is almost time for me to replace the chain, but that is due to over a year and 180+ hours on hard use on it. Like said before, I have almost no build up on the chain when using WD-40, just alittle dust that sticks to it. Most if not all chains nowadays use o-rings, that is why there isn't a need for any fancy lubes. before installing a new chain, let it sit and soak in some heavy gear oil overnight. Then just the WD-40 after washing. I don't have any damage to the o-rings or the chain and sprockets execpt those from normal use.

wd 40 is primarily fish oil..... i use it on the whole bike except for the lexan light and stickers. i buy it by the gallon and put it in a sprayer. wash the bike chain too and then apply wd 40,then wipe down afterwards so it isnt so slick. purple power seems to be too reactive to sunlight and dry days. so automagic of zephyrhills sells something called red hot which MUST be dilluted it is a caustic cleaner 1 to 7 or 8 ratio that works exceptionally well on DIRT, not grease or oil, which i like because it doesnt rob your bearings and such of lube. i have also used silicone spray in place of wd 40 but it isnt cost effective. enough about that im goin to replace my clutch see ya.

I've been using maxima chain guard (clear). Sprays on and no problems. It's safe for o-rings. I get it at extreme Honda, but any powersports place will have it or cycle gear. I use the maxima chain cleaner too. Chain looks like new.

The issue with WD-40 is that it doesn't stick. Chain lubes are made to stick. I use some brand of chain (can check brand later) and when I clean my quad I actually use WD-40 and a brush to clean the chain. Anyways, anything is better than a dry chain, so find something you like and let us know. :thumb:

WD40 doesn't stick and hold junk... I just apply it before every time I go riding and the chain is quiet as can be and smooth. I still have a can and a half of Maxima chain lube sitting on the shelf that I don't use now.

Looks like I am way off.
I use engine cleaner/advanced auto, to clean chain
Just a cheap gold high strength chain/w
No o-rings or x-rings!
easier on motor 1lb lighter and spins easier on bike.
Put bike up on 1 floor jack(center of axle) and spin your wheels.
If you try and spin the wheels with your hand I will get a couple revolutions
but when you use the o or x rings it doesn't spin freely its stops instantly!!!
grease gun and a brush (when it sits)
and of course chain wax when riding.
Oh well it must be an age thing thats how I was taught but it does work
for me atleast/Qski
